Copying your Stair Spindles and Newel Posts

Before obtaing a quote for replicating a stair spindle or newel post, there are a few things to consider. The main one being the height of the Handrail, which in England in has to be a minimum 900mm to the top of the Handrail to comply with building regulations. This is applicable to any new work, but if you are replacing any posts, it makes sense to have them made to regulation rather than refit them at a lower level. Most properties before the 1970’s would have had handrails fitted at a lower level as there were no regulations regarding stairs at the time, for this reason any repairs or replacements can be fitted at the old height, but not any new work.

If you have a standard closed string staircase, the stair spindles will need to be 900mm long but if you have a cut string staircase where the spindles sit on the actual tread and not the side string, you will need to order 1000mm spindles for the front spindle and 1100mm spindles for the rear spindle.

To obtain a Quote for Copying your existing Stair Spindles and Newel Posts, send an Email with a Photo of you’re existing Spindle or Post and include the following information.

Please include a tape measure held along side of the Spindle or Post when taking the photo’s, this allows us to read off the dimensions for laying out the design of the pattern section.

Once an order is placed, we ask for either an existing Spindle to be sent to us (this produces the most accurate copy) or three or four photo’s, one full length photo and two or three close ups of the pattern section. Please ensure the tape measure is held in place with gaffer tape or parcel tape etc, as it must not move between taking the photo’s.

Term and conditions of Copying Posts and Spindles.

In most cases copied Spindles are between 95% and 100% the same as the original, but the limitations of the copying process means certain details cannot be replicated exactly, in these cases the Spindles and Posts will be supplied as close to a match as we can produce.

Spindles and posts should be primed or treated with the finish you are using as soon as they arrive and should be kept in a cool place until fitted. Under no circumstances should they be kept in a warm room, Conservatory, Greenhouse or in the back of a van or car as the hot temperature will distort the spindles, especially the thinner items.

When carrying out building work, a lot of moisture produced from any concreting or plastering etc and this will be soaked up by any bare timber and the surface will go rough and need rubbing down with glasspaper, this can be avoided if the spindles are finished with decor before fitting so that only the top coat need to be applied after fitting.
