Almost all of the Stair Spindles and Newel Posts that are found in pre 1950’s houses were made in the local area and not mass produced which means it is almost impossible to find a match off the shelf.
Stair spindles and newel posts were made using a Rotary Knife Lathe which was time consuming and costly to set up, typically eight to ten hours for a Spindle design, although they were very versatile and could achieve very small details and 90 degree cuts. Read more.
Installing Stair Spindles and Newel Posts
The following is a step by step guide to the system we use for fitting Stair Parts and is based on changing the existing Balustrade for new Parts and assumes the existing Stairs already has square Newel Posts.
Most of the following can also be applied to fitting Parts to a new Staircase.
First you need to check you have all the right Tools for the job as follows.
Bear in mind most of the Tools you will find in DIY Stores are inferior to proper Tools and will make the job many times more difficult than it need be.
Applying finishes to Stair spindles and newel posts
In general, Softwood Timber is best Varnished or Waxed and Hardwood Timber is best Oiled or Waxed, their are exceptions to this depending on what colour and finish you are looking to achieve.
Don’t be put off using an Oil, because modern finishing Oil is easier to apply than Varnish, dries just as quick as Spirit based Varnish and looks better with age. Read more,
